Freedom... Not Yet

Journal Entry: Sun Apr 6, 2008, 4:46 AM
I’ve finally completed my 3 years of studies in Digital Animation. Learned much and experienced much. Glad that it was over and now I can move on in pursuing art in life... I... think.

Currently I’m freelancing in Southern Star, doing 3D modeling. I'm pretty slow with the program, but still manageable. Bah, as I was Maya taught, it was quite a hassle for me to use 3dsMax. Or maybe the problem lies between keyboard and chair. Haha.

Work has been tiring so usually I sleep without practice drawing. Oh gosh. o_O Then after a few months I'll be serving National Service for 2 years. Seem like the road to freedom is still far away. But nevertheless I'll try to draw when I have the weekends.

I won't be posting works anytime soon. M scanner isn't working is one reason; also I'm back to learning fundamentals instead of doing complete renders. Attended my 2nd nude life drawing session, and found how much foreign my compressed charcoal is to me. Lost the touch I had back in school. Hmm...

I would like to feature some artist that I just +watched recently (no particular order). As a side note, I don't TRADE featuring. They're featured simply because I was awed at their works.

1.) :iconelsevilla:
You might already know him; he's quite popular I think. He's skilled and quick with penciling and painter. I like his comic panels the most. Watching this deviant is of good benefit, he likes to share his experience of his work, his life in dA, and his insights of etiquette.

2.) :iconnjoo:
Another popular artist who is really skilled in painting. There are some monsters concepts I like in his gallery. Oh yea, he participated in Dominance War recently, his idea is tooo cool.

3.) :iconkasai:
What caught our attention to this guy was his demo reel. I like this guy's pencil works, almost the same style as I'm going. He has many sketches and silhouettes worth checking out.

4.) :iconlysol-jones:
This is a personal favorite. I thought he used illustrator, but found out they're done by Photoshop. Anyway his works has this... kind of... hm... vector style to it. He paid attention to every line or curve. There’s lots of attitude in his characters.

5.) :iconcuson:
Check his gallery and I won't have to say more. He has a very unique, quirky kind of design. Love his colors!

Lastly, I'll just pimp 3 friends of mine who joined dA lately. Hope they post more works.

Nearing the End

Journal Entry: Tue Feb 5, 2008, 4:21 AM
It's only about 2 weeks before my school life in NYP ends. A big thank you to my teammates who worked together well in procducing the animation. Kind of eager to get out of here and started with working life. But wait, there's National Service... -__-

Reading Mike Mattesi's book called "Force". It's a very popular book on life drawing for animators (but I guess it applies to every artist as well). A very inspiring book about force, rhythm, and more. If you have not you should. =D

Just posted 2 more deviations!! Yay, it's like Finally. Been rushing out portfolio for the FUSION2008 grad show, so have been doing some of my personal works (one will be larger than A2!). My sculpture and its turntable are up for now, but there'll be more coming soon.

I'll be painting more, definitely. Here is my 'imaginary wishlist' for things to paint (in no particular order):
- lion-like man (lineart done)
- cute creature with concept
- a girl, an appealing one
- a monster, can be anything
- environment (er... is that a fly?)
- self portrait?

How long will it take me? I wonder, maybe a year or so...? Till later.

Alive and Still Drawing

Journal Entry: Mon Nov 5, 2007, 8:43 AM
Eh... still busy with life nowadays. Now it's only less than 3 weeks until I left Southern Star and back to NYP for FYPJ. Not that life will be better though, just more... meaningful? Been sort of tired of mudane job over there. But the people there are great! =D

Missing school life now... I should appreciate it now before it ends too quickly. Haiz~

Have been trying to draw for leisure when I'm free. Now I would like to really go back into basic to build up on my fundamentals (actually checked dictionary for the spelling lol).

Been reading How to Draw Animals by Jack Hamm, a fantastic book that teaches more than the basics but not too much unnecessary stuffs too. Also, Drawing Dynamic Hands by Burne Hogarth, pretty self-explanatory, because I found myself drawing hands too slowly.

Bought a small sketchbook (for the sake of stealth) and started on MRT life drawing. I tried markers, and they (or maybe it's just me) suck at small canvas so I think I'll go back to ball-point pens for that.

Oh yea, been to my very first nude figure drawing session! Organised by Southern Star internally, and half of the price sponsored too. That 3 hours are really worthwhile, I've never studied as closely as I had did. X3

Oh, and if you're wondering, it's female. But you (or anyone else for that matter) won't been embarrased/aroused or whatsoever. Everyone becomes professional at that point of time, trust me. We were lucky to have a good model as well. Don't miss the chance if you ever come across the opportunity to attend one!

However, I had not been doing much digital painting as I would like too. My friend told me that I should toggle between foundamentals and complete works or else I'll find the jump too hard to struggle. I'll try my best though. Oh my god~ PORTFOLIO! Argh!!

Hope you guys (even though a very small number of people reading this) are finding time to do some sketching too. :) Thanks for your time.

And also to add, view my Favourites section! Those are the ones that I really appreciate. I think thrice before adding a fav!

Here are some featured artists that I feel deviants should take a good look at their gallery! Kudos for good work. :D

1. :iconwen-m: He's one of the best character designer for medieval/fantasy style I've seen. He has fantastic highly detailed linework, even though I'm not into his coloring.

2. :iconroboto-kun: I like his painting style. He has great brushstrokes and nice use of colors. Too bad he don't update very often.

3. :icontobiee: If you're a fan of good speedpaintings like me, you should view his gallery. I've seen bad ones before, but this guy can really do speedpaints that work.

4. :iconweefactory: My friend. XD Nice black and white photography, with nice concepts too.

Do take a look around. Watch Ratatouille too! Fantastic animation!
